The redesign of a comprehensive credit valuation tool
The Experian BusinessInsight software is something of a Swiss army knife, a tool that can do just about anything within its field.

Unfortunately, the user experience of the product hasn’t received much attention over the years. This has resulted in software with endless opportunities but various complicated user flows, which is why Experian was eager to enhance this flagship product.

Experian’s understanding of how their product was used was mostly based on assumptions, as tracking had never been implemented in the product. To cover the actual use cases, we conducted more than 25 interviews with current and potential users of the system. Their feedback provided us with the empirical foundation needed to document the use of BusinessInsight.
Ultimately, this led to a complete redesign of the software, with a focus on simple intuitive user flows, room for customisation and data accessibility, both in terms of finding the right data, but also having it presented in a pleasing way.

Customisable dashboards

One of the key needs we uncovered during user testing was the importance of role-specific overviews. People working with the Experian tool had very different responsibilities, and a single fixed dashboard simply didn’t fit everyone’s workflow.

To solve this, we designed an adaptive dashboard that was fully customisable. Users could choose exactly which widgets they wanted to display, how they wanted to display them, and then arrange them freely using a drag-and-drop grid. This meant that an analyst could have a completely different setup than a credit manager – optimising their workflow and making sure they always had the most relevant data right at their fingertips.

For me, this feature is a great example of why user testing is so crucial. By understanding the real day-to-day needs of each role, we were able to design a solution that made the product far more effective and meaningful for everyone using it.
